Seminoles Top The Hatters

The Seminoles, ranked 37th nationally, hosted Stetson University on Tuesday, February 19th, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center on the Florida State University campus. Florida State entered the contest with a perfect record at home on the season. The record was not broken. The Seminoles defeated the Hatters by a score of 7-0.

Xavier Luscan and Mat Cloer got the Seminoles off to a strong start in doubles action as they defeated Thomas Bross and Kenny Bohannon of Stetson at the No. 3 position, 8-0. In No. 2 doubles, Gustav Bucht and Romain Jurd defeated Christian Moe and Alexander Antonijevic by a score of 8-2. Florida State’s Alex Herrera and Jarrod Owen battled back from a 5-2 deficit to even the score at 6-6, before falling to Piero Demichelli and Vittorio Fratta of Stetson, 8-6.

Jurd led the way for the Seminoles in singles play as he defeated Fratta at the No. 2 position, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 5 singles, Owen defeated Bross by a score of 6-1, 6-1. Freshman Chip Webb had a strong performance at the No. 4 position as he defeated Moe of Stetson, 6-2, 6-2. Luscan defeated Demichelli in No. 1 singles by a score of 6-4, 6-1. At the No. 6 position, it was senior Jeff Scarella who earned the point for Florida State as he defeated Eduardo Richelle de Jong of Stetson, 6-4, 7-5. Cloer earned a point for the Seminoles after Antonijevic of Stetson retired due to injury. Prior to the injury, Cloer led the match by a score of 6-2, 2-0.

“It is always good to win convincingly,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “The guys are getting in the habit of coming out ready to play hard everyday.”

The Seminoles host the Alabama Crimson Tide on Friday, February 22nd, at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Alabama enters the contest ranked 26th in the nation. The match is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
