ATHENS, Ga. – The Florida State women’s tennis team battled hard on day one of the ITA Southeast Regional at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex, but victories were hard to come by. The doubles pairing of Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright moved on to Saturday’s round of 16 competition, while singles victories were secured by Mia Vriens in the main draw and Majlena Pederson in the B draw.
“The ITA Regionals is one of the toughest tournaments of the fall, and our region is hands down one of the strongest in the country,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “We started out the day well, grabbing a tough fought doubles win by Kerrie and Daneika.”
Borthwick and Cartwright defeated Guilietta Boha and Carlotta Orlando of FIU by a score of 8-6. Duda Dos Santos were eliminated, 8-3, by Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey from Georgia Tech.
The singles started off on a great note with Mia Vriens defeating Josephine Haraldson of UCF in dominating fashion, 6-0, 6-0. Vriens later retired from her second round match against Miami’s Stephanie Wagner at a score of 4-1 in the first set.
Cartwright and Borthwick each lost in three-set heartbreakers. Cartwright won the first set against USF’s Olaya Garrido 6-4, but was unable to put her away, losing the next two sets, 6-2, 6-4. Borthwick also took the first set, 7-6, against Megan Kurey (GT), but lost the final two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Schleich lost to Georgia State’s Abigail Tere-Apisah, 6-1, 6-3. Lilly Kimbell of UGA proved too much for Porry, defeating the senior by a score of 6-3, 6-3. Dos Santos was the final Seminole in the main draw and dropped her match, 6-3, 6-1, to Miami’s Lina Lileikite.
Pederson competed in the singles B draw and defeated Liza Klyachkin of Mercer, 6-0, 6-3, to move on to Saturday’s quarterfinals where she will face Tarani Kamoe of Georgia State at 3:00 p.m.
Borthwick and Cartwright will continue in the doubles draw at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday against the No. 4 doubles seed pairing of Clementina Riobueno and Monique Albuquerque of Miami.
“We have a lot to play for tomorrow,” added Hyde. “Kerrie and D are on a mission.”
The singles consolation draw awaits the remaining Seminoles, with four matches starting at noon. Borthwick will be taking on USF’s Loreto Alonso, Cartwright going up against Cortney Cesarini of UCF, Schleich versus Virginie Stein from Kennesaw State and Dos Santos will be facing Rasheeda McAdoo from Georgia Tech. Porry will play at 1:30 p.m. against Jana Hueckinghaus of Kennesaw State.
