Shakayla Thomas Named Miss Basketball of Alabama

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Incoming Florida State women’s basketball player Shakayla Thomas (Sylacauga, Ala./Sylacauga HS) earned the state of Alabama’s top honor today when she was chosen as Miss Basketball by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Thomas received the award for the first time in her illustrious six-year career while also being named the AHSAA Class 5A Player of the Year for the third time. She was honored at the Player of the Year luncheon presented by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association.

In her six years as a member of the varsity basketball team, Thomas corralled a state record 2,643 rebounds and scored a remarkable 4,242 points. In her senior season, she averaged 33.1 points and 12.8 rebounds en route to receiving a nod on the 2014 USA Today All-USA Third Team.

Thomas recently earned MVP honors for her Alabama squad in the annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Classic, scoring 31 points on March 21. She led her Sylacauga High School team to a spot in the state championship after pouring in 40 points in the semifinals against Brewer. Thomas’ team fell in the championship game to top-seeded Wenonah, but she still managed to score 31 points with 15 boards.

The 5-foot-11 player will be joined next season by another heralded signee in 5-foot-8 guard Chania Ray of Alexandra, Va. German-born forward Ama Degbeon of Grünberg, Germany, is also part of the 2014 recruiting class that received a No. 14 ranking by the All-Star Girls Report.
