TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Florida State Women’s Basketball senior forward Shakayla Thomas was selected to the Wooden Award Late Season Top 20, announced on Monday evening by the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
The Sylacauga, Ala., native has made it through a couple cuts for one of the top individual awards in college basketball. Thomas was named to the original 2017 Wooden Award Preseason Top 30 Watch List, then was kept for the Wooden Midseason 25 on Jan. 11.
Players not appearing on this list are still eligible for the National Ballot, which will be announced in early March and will consist of 15 top players.
Thomas is coming off being named a Top 10 candidate for the Cheryl Miller Award given to the nation’s best small forward. This season, she has twice been named the espnW Player of the Week and was also an ACC Player of the Week as well.
Thomas is averaging 17.7 points per game, 7.3 rebounds and is shooting 50.7 percent (177-of-349) from the floor. She has eight 20-point performances this season, including a season-best 31 points and 10 rebounds in a strong 94-93 road win at Iowa.
The reigning ACC Player of the Year leads the Seminoles this season with five double-doubles, which included a recent 28-11 performance at Wake Forest where she recorded 26 of her 28 points in the second half. Thomas also has seven games this year with 10 or more rebounds.
The two-time All-American ranks sixth in the ACC in scoring.
Thomas leads the Seminoles into a big ACC matchup on Thursday night as 12th-ranked Florida State (19-4, 7-3) hosts third-place Virginia (15-8, 8-2) at 7 p.m. at the Donald L. Tucker Center.
Thursday’s game is National Girls and Women in Sports Day, where all youth 18 and under receive free admission to the game.
