Shane Robinson Named A Semi-Finalist For Dick Howser Trophy

May 20, 2005

Hattiesburg, MS – Seminole sophomore Shane Robinson is on the watch list for every National Player of the Year award this season and he has now taken the next step towards winning one of those honors. The Tampa, FL native was named one of 16 semi-finalists for the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy presented to the top college baseball player in America. Robinson is one of three semi-finalists from the ACC.

The outfielder leads FSU in nine major offensive categories including batting average, slugging percentage, runs scored, hits, doubles and steals. He was the first player in America to record 100 hits this season and he is the first FSU player ever to record 100 hits and 40 steals in a season. Robinson came into the weekend first in the nation in runs scored. He was third in the country in total bases and batting average and fourth in doubles.

Robinson is also among the league leaders in the ACC. Coming into the weekend he was leading the ACC in batting average, hits, runs scored, doubles, stolen bases, total bases and on base percentage.

The Xanthus Dick Howser Trophy, given in memory of the former Florida State University All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, is regarded by many as college baseball’s most prestigious award. The award was created in 1987, shortly after Howser’s death.

The membership of the NCBWA will choose the Xanthus-Dick Howser Trophy based on three rounds of voting. The 2005 winner will announced at the College World Series in Omaha on Friday, June 17 at 10:00 a.m. CDT.

Robinson and Florida State will continue its series at No. 22 NC State (37-14) Friday at 7:00 p.m. The series is one of three key ACC series between the top six teams in the conference this weekend that will determine final seeding for the ACC Tournament. Florida State can still finish as high as second or as low as sixth.
