Tallahassee, Fla. – Florida State head softball coach JoAnne Graf announced Wednesday, August 1, the addition of Wisconsin’s Barbara Sherwood to the Seminole coaching staff as an assistant working with the pitchers and catchers.
“We’re very excited to have Barbara join our staff,” Graf said. “She brings a wealth of experience and will be a positive impact on the future success of our team.”
Sherwood joins the Seminoles after spending two seasons with the University of Wisconsin as an assistant pitching and catching coach.
“Florida State University has a tremendous athletic tradition and the softball program is one of the best in the country year after year,” Sherwood said. “I’m honored to be a part of the staff with Coach Graf and Coach Berndt. They both have an enormous amount of knowledge of the game and both are respected a great deal in the softball world.”
Sherwood began her coaching career at Troy University in 1998 as a student assistant coach, but quickly moved to the graduate assistant level the following year. Upon receiving her master’s degree in education in June of 2000, the former four-year letterwinning catcher was named the top assistant.
While at Troy, Sherwood recruited three All-Region athletes, including Jocelyn McCallum of Australia. McCallum was named the Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Year for the 2005-2006 season and holds the single season strikeout record at Troy.
In 2005 Sherwood made the leap from Alabama to Madison, Wisc., to join the Badgers’ coaching staff as an assistant pitching and catching coach. While there, Wisconsin’s pitching staff ERA was ranked No. 4 in the Big Ten for the 2007 season.
“I am excited to embark upon this new challenge of working with this talented team and to be a part of this incredible institution,” Sherwood said.
