Short-Handed Women’s Tennis Falls 4-3 To No. 18 UCF

Tallahassee, FL – Playing without two of its top singles players, the fourth-ranked FSU women’s tennis team went into a decisive final match on court one with 18th-ranked UCF. With the match tied 3-3, Emmanuelle Salas took the nation’s 28th-ranked singles player to three sets but was unable to pull off the upset. The loss was the first of the season at home for the Seminoles and completes the squad’s regular season slate with a 16-4 record.

“Today was a tough one but I am really proud of the huge fight shown by every member of our team under some tough circumstances,” said FSU Head Coach Jen Hyde. “The fight in this team is for real and we couldn’t be more excited to reset our focus on the next task which is to compete for an ACC Championship.”

FSU had to adjust its doubles lineup Friday with one-half of the nation’s 45th-ranked pair unavailable. Despite the change, the Seminoles still secured the point. FSU’s fifth-ranked doubles team of Nandini Das and Andrea Garcia took care of business 6-3 and the 19th-ranked pair of Salas and Victoria Allen did the same with a 6-4 win.

With FSU’s top-ranked singles player unable to go and its line four-player out as well, Hyde had to move players up the lineup and also rely on the entire roster versus a top-20 opponent. Victoria Allen, playing on court four, and Anna Arkadianou, playing on five, each secured points for the Seminoles but FSU was unable to upset either the No. 22 or No. 28 singles players in the nation, in what turned out to be pivotal points in the match.

The Seminoles will now head into the ACC Championships next week in Rome, GA as one of the top seeds in the tournament. The full bracket and seedings will be released Sunday.

“It will be great for our girls to wrap up their finals and take care of their business in the classroom and then they can have a narrow focus on competition,” said FSU Head Coach Jen Hyde. “We are going to move full steam ahead into next weekend.”
