Florida State has made a habit of signing talented, big-bodied defensive tackles over the years under the direction of assistant coach Odell Haggins and Keith Bryant is the latest one on that list.

A former Miami verbal pledge, Bryant reopened his recruitment in early December of 2012 after being committed to the ‘Canes since January of that year. In the end, he signed with FSU despite official visits to South Carolina, Miami and Purdue and offers from many of the top programs across the country.

Despite his public signing-day decision to suit up in the garnet and gold, Bryant worked behind the scenes to help convince other top recruits that the Seminoles should be their choice when the ink dried on their respective letters of intent.

“He was late. He was key on getting some of those other guys,” FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said. “You talk about a guy working the phone. He wanted good players around him. He was working some of the other guys, constantly texting and calling people to get that class together. He wanted good players around him. That’s the sign of an unselfish teammate.”

Bryant is the latest in a long line of highly ranked defensive tackles to sign with the ‘Noles.

At 6-foot-2 and 306 pounds, Bryant will fit right in on a depth chart known for its size, strength and backfield-penetrating ways.

His addition to the defensive tackle corps will also help ease the sting of losing veterans Anthony McCloud and Everette Dawkins. Bryant will now get a chance to push for playing time behind the likes of Timmy Jernigan, Demonte McAllister, Nile Lawrence-Stample and Eddie Goldman, among others.

Bryant is known for his strong burst off the line and his physicality at the point of attack.

“He’s big. He can really run and change direction,” Fisher said. “He’s powerful. He’s a very good player.”

Bryant will have the option to wear his Atlantic High School No. 95 when he gets to FSU with Bjoern Werner no longer on the roster.
