Soccer Picked to Finish Second in ACC; Place Four on All-ACC Preseason Team

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Coming off an ACC Championship and a National Championship in 2018, the Seminoles are once again expected to finish towards the top of the ACC. Florida State was selected to finish second in the league as announced by the conference on Thursday.

Florida State tallied 185 points, trailing only North Carolina who earned 188 points. The Seminoles do lead the ACC in first-place votes with eight, two more than North Carolina. FSU was also one of two teams to place multiple student-athletes on the preseason All-ACC Team – senior Deyna Castellanos, redshirt junior Malia Berkely, sophomore Jaelin Howell and sophomore Yujie Zhao.

Castellanos returns to Tallahassee for her final season in the Garnet and Gold. She led the team in goals and assists a season ago, seeing 10 shots reach the back of the net while assisting on eight other. The senior currently ranks third amongst active players in goals with 36. Castellanos was a First Team All-ACC selection a season ago and a Second-Team United Soccer Coaches All-American.

Berkely is back for her third season of action with Florida State coming off a season in which she scored one goal and assisted on seven others. She was a Third Team All-ACC member a season ago.

Howell heads into her second season with the Seminoles coming off an award filled freshman campaign. She was named Third Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches and was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Freshmen Best XI first team. Howell was also a member of the ACC All-Freshman Team and was Second-Team All-ACC. She capped off her impressive freshman season by making the College Cup All-Tournament Team.

Zhao had what many considered to be the best freshman season in the country a season ago. She was named the TopDrawerSoccer National Freshman of the Year and was a Second Team All-American according to the United Soccer Coaches. Zhao was selected as First Team All-Region and First Team on the TopDrawerSoccer Freshmen Best XI. She finished off her freshman season with First Team All-ACC honors and a spot on the ACC All-Freshman Team.

The Noles begin the season on August 22 when they take on TCU at home at 7:00 pm. The match will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
