TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State soccer team placed five student-athletes on the United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Team.
Jaelin Howell, Malia Berkely, Emily Madril and Yujie Zhao were all named to the first team, while Cristina Roque was named to the second team. The Seminoles lead the Atlantic Region with four selections to the first team. Howell and Zhao were named to the All-Region Team for the third consecutive season and Berkely was named to the All-Region team for the second straight year. Madril and Roque earned the honor for the first time.
It is the third straight season that the Seminoles had at least four members on the All-Region teams and the 6th time that the Noles have placed five on an All-Region team.
Howell has started in all 14 games for the Seminoles this season as their starting holding midfielder. She has helped anchor a backline that has recorded nine shutouts in 14 games and has only allowed seven goals all season. Howell has also made her presence known on the offensive end as she has scored five goals to go with a pair of assists. Howell was named the ACC’s Midfielder of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team in the fall.
Berkely started all 11 games in the fall for the Seminoles, helping them to their seventh ACC Tournament title. She anchored the defensive backline from her center-back position that held opponents to six goals in 11 games. The Seminoles recorded seven shutouts in the fall, including shutouts in the first four games of the season. Berkely was named the ACC’s Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-ACC First Team in the fall. She became the first player in ACC history to win back-to-back Player of the Year honors
Madril has started in all 14 games this season for the Seminoles as their starting center-back. She has played all but 10 minutes for the Garnet and Gold this season. Madril has helped lead the Seminoles defense to nine shutouts in 14 games. The Seminoles have only allowed seven goals and 52 shots with 31 shots on goal. She has also helped the Seminoles on offense, scoring 2 of FSU’s 40 goals this season. Madril was named to the All-ACC Second Team in the fall.
Zhao has played in all 14 games this season for Florida State, recording three goals and four assists. Zhao has created excitement for the Seminole offense as she has played in 746 minutes off the bench. Zhao was named to the All-ACC First Team in the fall.
Roque earned All-Atlantic Region Second Team honors after her freshman season in goal. She only allowed seven goals in 14 games this season as she spent all but nine minutes for the Garnet and Gold in goal. Roque recorded 21 saves, good for a .750 save percentage and had a .50 GAA., good for 18th in the country and second in the ACC. She was named to the All-ACC Second Team and All-Freshman Team.
