Soccer Takes On In-State Rival Miami

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (11-3-0, 5-1-0) has just one game this week, as the Noles take on in-state rival Miami (4-6-2, 1-4-1) at home Friday, October 18 at 5 pm. The Seminoles enter this game coming off of their first ACC loss of the season.

The Seminoles are led offensively by Deyna Castellanos and freshman Jenna Nighswonger. Castellanos leads the team in both goals (8) and assists (8). Nighswonger is second on the team in both categories with five goals and three assists.

Florida State was off to an impressive start in ACC play, winning their first five games in conference. This was good for the third-best start in school history. FSU had only started 4-0 or better in ACC play three times prior to this season. The Garnet and Gold were also on their fourth-longest winning streak in program history. During the span of FSU’s nine-game win streak, they outscored their opponents 28-10 and recorded four shutouts.

This week’s game between the Seminoles and Hurricanes is the 20th match-up between the two programs. Florida State leads the all-time series 15-4 and won 15 of the last 17 meetings. In those 15 wins, Florida State did not allow Miami to score seven times and the Noles have only let up more than one goal three times in the series.

Last season when the two rivals met up the Hurricanes got the best of FSU winning 1-0 in overtime. The Noles outplayed Miami the entire game, but it only took one shot for Miami to win the game, scoring a golden goal in the 97th minute.

Friday’s game is on the regional sports network. Admission to all regular season FSU soccer games is free of charge and seats are available on a first come first serve basis. For links to the broadcast and live stats go the soccer schedule page on Seminoles.com.
