CARY, N.C. – The top-seeded Florida State soccer team (12-0-0) faces off with No. 9 Penn State on Wednesday, May 5 at 3 pm in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Seminoles and Nittany Lions have met five previous times with the Seminoles winning three of the five meetings. The two teams have met twice in the NCAA Tournament, splitting both of their matchups. The last time the two programs met was in the 2018 Elite 8. Florida State defeated Penn State 1-0 to advance to the College Cup where they would win their second National Championship.
Florida State heads into this round of 16 matchup with a 13-3-1 all-time record in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Garnet and Gold got here after a bye in the first round and a 3-0 win over Milwaukee in the round of 32. Florida State scored all three goals in the second half. Kristen McFarland both scored their first goals of the season and Jaelin Howell capped off the game with her fifth goal of the year.
NCAA Tournament History
This is Florida State’s 21st consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. The Seminoles are 65-17-3 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, good for a .782 winning percentage. It is the second-best postseason winning percentage of all-time.
For the 16th straight season and 17th time overall, Florida State received a national seed in the NCAA Tournament. This season’s No. 1 national seed for the Seminoles marked the ninth time in school history the Seminoles earned a No. 1 seed.
