Joins the Seminole men’s basketball team as a walk-on after two very productive years at Miami Dade Community College…will add depth and experience at the guard position and help the Seminoles prepare for the rigors of the season…has collegiate playing experience with two years of high level junior college under his belt…begins his first season at Florida State with three years of eligibility after redshirting as a freshman at Miami Dade Community College during the 2008-09 season.


Graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in Miami in 2008…earned two varsity letters and was the team captain during his senior season…played in the Dade vs. Broward County and the Dade County private school all-star game following his senior season…averaged 10.0 points, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game as a starter and a senior captain…earned the Sportsmanship Award from the coaching staff following his junior and senior seasons…named as the teams’ Most Improved Player following his junior season…was also a letterwinner as a member of the track and field team and participated in the events of the 100 and 200 meter sprints and the long jump.


Graduated from Miami Dade College with his Associates Degree in 2010…averaged 8.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as a sophomore…started 10 games in his second season…did not play as a true freshman as he elected to take a redshirt year…scored his career high of 17 points against Palm Beach Community College came on five of seven shooting from the field during the 2009-10 season.


Born Dec. 22, 1989…Rafael is the son of Ana and Rafael Portuondo…has three sisters: Anamari, Olivia and Margot…through training and pick-up games in his hometown of Miami he has developed close friendships with Raja Bell of the Utah Jazz and Rasual Butler of the Los Angeles Clippers…earned the Citizenship Award at the conclusion of his senior year at Christopher Columbus…major is social science.
