Gained valuable experience as a freshman, competing in six cross country meets…was a fixture in the top seven as the Noles advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2015…redshirted during the indoor and outdoor seasons, but competed unattached.
Cross Country: debuted with a seventh-place finish vs. Boston University at Franklin Park…covered five-mile course in 25:02.4 to finish 58th at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational…recorded his fastest 8k (25:07.5) in a 19th-place finish at the UAB Blazer Classic…after competing at the ACC Championships, produced a solid 48th-place finish as the No. 6 man at the South Region Championships, running 32:46.8 in his first 10k at the Apalachee Regional Park. Indoor: did not compete on the track but placed 22nd at the USATF U20 Cross Country Championships at Apalachee Regional Park on Feb. 2. Outdoor: competed unattached..posted an impressive 14:31.84 5000 at the Florida Relays…followed by running 31:08.53 to finish 19th in the 10,000 at the Penn Relays…placed eighth in the 10,000 at the USATF U20 Championships.
Standout distance runner from Tallahassee’s Chiles High, where he was a three-time All-State performer in both cross country and track…scoring contributor to a Florida 3A state title on the track and three state cross country runner-up teams…posted high school personal-bests of 4:19.35 (1600), 9:10.68 (3200) and owns a 5k cross country best of 15:50.10 (Great American)…3200 PB came at 2018 Arcadia (Cal.) Invitational where he was seventh in the seeded race…finished sixth and fourth as a junior and senior, respectively, at the state cross country championship meet and was runner-up in the 3200 as a senior and fourth in the 1600…was a three-time, first-team All-Big Bend selection in cross country and track & field…outstanding student who was inducted into the National Honor Society in 2015…graduated as an honors scholar…majoring in sport management…is the son of John and Kristy Newland…born Aug. 8, 2000.
