Grace Kerwin became the tenth member of the Florida State women’s tennis team on Jan. 20…a Tallahassee, Fla., native, Grace is in sixth grade at Montford Middle School…in June of 2013, Grace was diagnosed with Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM), a rare autoimmune disease, resulting in muscle weakness…prior to her diagnosis, Grace was healthy and very active…she was on the swim and dance teams and played soccer…after the diagnosis, Grace become totally dependent…she had difficulty sitting up and lifting her arms on her own…she was barely able to walk, requiring a wheelchair to get around…she went through a month of inpatient treatment, which included intense rehab…she continues to receive treatment once a month and undergoes physical and aquatic therapy twice a week…Grace is doing better and no long uses a wheelchair, though long distances can be difficult…she will continue to receive treatment over the next year…Grace joined the Florida State team through a program called Team Impact, which places young kids with sports teams in an effort to ‘improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team’.


Grace was born December 22, 2003…she has one brother and two sisters…her older brother Taylor runs cross country and track at the University of Alabama Huntsville…her older sister Emma is a sophomore at Chiles High School where she plays softball…her younger sister Lucy is in fourth grade at DeSoto Trail Elementary School…Grace loves to run and play outside and jump on the trampoline…her favorite color is green…her favorite foods are stuffed shells and snow crab claws…she loves Scooby Doo, the Disney Channel and the Percy Jackson series…she likes to build with Legos and Kinetix…her hobby is being happy.
