Randell Jackson scored 20 points and Lamar Greer added 16 to
lead Florida State to an 82-67 victory over Syracuse in the
first round of the National Invitation Tournament.
James Collins had 14 points for Florida State (17-11), which
will play at Michigan State in the second round.
Otis Hill scored 16 points and Ramel Lloyd added 13 for an
undermanned Syracuse team, which one year ago was beginning a
run which culminated in a loss to Kentucky in the NCAA
Championship game.
Florida State controlled the boards, outrebounding Syracuse,
43-32, en route to its first victory in four meetings between the
schools. The Seminoles grabbed 14 offensive rebounds.
“The only place we could beat that zone was with second shots,”
said Florida State coach Pat Kennedy. “We obviously had a size
advantage here. We don’t normally get a size advantage in our
conference.”
“Look at the games we struggled in this year and it has been
rebounding in 90 percent of those games if not every game,”
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim lamented. “I really believe was are
just too small.”
The Orangemen (19-13) played much of the game without Todd
Burgan, who shares the team lead in scoring, and part of the
game without point guard Jason Hart.
Burgan, who averaged 15.7 points per game this season, played
just seven minutes and failed to score. He continued to be
bothered by a finger injury suffered during the Big East
Tournament. Hart scored just six points in 24 minutes before
leaving due to a pulled stomach muscle, also suffered in last
week’s conference tournament.
“I think the big difference was them not having Todd Burgan,”
Kennedy said. “I think for them Burgan is very, very
important.”
“When we don’t have Todd and Jason, we’re just giving away too
much on the offensive end,” Boeheim said. “I really believe
without Todd for the whole season we wouldn’t have won 10
games.”
