TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State softball team took an early loss to Western Illinois 0-1 but bounced back and won their second game of the night against Toledo 9-1 in their first day of competition at the Tallahassee Democrat/FSU Invitational on the campus of Florida State. The Lady Seminoles improve to 14-14-1 on the season as Toledo falls to 4-7.

“It’s really hard to tell which team will show up,” Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. ” They came back well in the second game which is a really good sign.”

Jen White allowed only four hits and had seven strikeouts for the Lady Seminoles in the 0-1 loss to Western Illinois. Western Illinois scored their run in the third inning off an FSU error. White and Danielle Cox went 1-3 from the plate as Corrie Williams went 1-2.

The Lady Seminoles rebounded from the early game with a 9-1 win over Toledo in the late game. Dana Bailey was perfect from the plate, going 4-4 and adding a triple as was Jesse McGregor who added an RBI. Danielle Cox, Christy Cerecedes, Theresa Edenfield and Kimmy Carter also added an RBI each as Bailey, Edenfield and Felicia Williams each had a stolen base. Leslie Malerich struck out nine batters and pitched her first no-hitter of her young career.

“I have never felt like that ever in my career,” Malerich said. “I didn’t know until Coach Bolster came out and told me after the game. I don’t pay attention to that stuff and no one told me but it’s a great feeling.”

The Lady Seminoles will continue action in the Invitational Saturday with their Noon game against Furman at Messer Park. Bracket play will begin Saturday at 3:00pm at the Messer fields.
