FSU Cross Country Competes at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Florida State women’s cross country team easily won their season opening meet, with five of the first six finishers at the Argonaut Invitational. The men, who ran a “B” team, posted a second place finish in the four-team meet.

Leading the way for the Lady Seminoles was true freshman Cynthia Campbell. Campbell, a native of Canada, covered the two-mile course in 11:56, well ahead of West Florida’s Tanya Simpson at 12:19. Placing third through sixth for the FSU women were: Natailie Reid (12:21), Diana Hartnup (12:33), Mary Gaskins (12:57) and Nicole Singleton (12:57).

For the men’s team, FSU newcomer Michael Maier ran as an open competitor and won the 4-mile contest with a time of 20:43. The top finisher for the Seminole “B” squad was Justin Palmer at 21:56, seventh overall. Following in the scoring column were Jonas Amos (22:12), Corey Frank (23:00), Jacob Short (23:30) and Jeremiah Hunt (23:48).

Both teams will have an open date next weekend. The men will travel to Birmingham for the NCAA Region IX Preview Meet on September 20 while the women will run at the Vanderbilt Invitational in Nashville.
