Director of Student-Athlete Development and Community Service

Derrick Coles is entering his fifth academic year at Florida State University. He oversees two male initiative programs: Reachable, Educated Approachable Leaders (REAL) Men & Leaders Yearning For Excellence (LYFE). Coles also created programs that contribute to the educational, career and personal development for the Men’s & Women’s Basketball and Football student-athletes.

Coles was previously the Director of Compliance at FSU, which he served as the primary compliance contact for Men’s & Women’s Basketball, Softball and both Swimming & Diving programs.

He also had employment stints at Norfolk State University where he served as the compliance coordinator and Hampton University where he was the assistant director of sports information.

The Richmond, Va. native received his Bachelor’s Degree in marketing from Virginia Union in 2007 and his Master’s in Sports Management from Virginia State in 2009.

Coles is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC) and the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A).

Derrick resides in Tallahassee with his beautiful wife, Selena, and son, Derrick Jr.
