John Stephenson joined the Florida State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Compliance Office in September of 2017 as the Director of Compliance, after a previous stint as an Assistant Director of Athletics Compliance with Indiana University and athletics compliance internships with the University of North Carolina and East Carolina University.
As the Director of Athletics Compliance, Stephenson primarily oversees the compliance areas of Financial Aid (Bylaw 15) and Awards and Benefits (Bylaw 16) for the Florida State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Stephenson researches, prepares, and submits secondary rules violations and legislative relief waivers. Stephenson also provides NCAA and ACC rules interpretations and education to coaches, student-athletes, and other athletic department staff members. Stephenson serves as the primary compliance liaison for M/W’s Basketball, M/W’s Tennis, and M’s/W’s Cross Country/Track & Field.
Stephenson received his Bachelor of Science in Recreational Sports Management from North Carolina Central University. During his four-year undergraduate career at North Carolina Central University, Stephenson participated on the Men’s Tennis Team. Furthering his education, Stephenson acquired both Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees from North Carolina Central University.
Stephenson is a member of the National Association for Athletics Compliance, Minority Opportunities Athletic Association, American Bar Association, Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, the Missouri Bar, Professional Tennis Registry, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
Stephenson is a 2018 graduate of the NCAA Dr. Charles Whitcomb Leadership Institute.
Stephenson has a license to practice law in the state of Missouri. Stephenson is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina and currently resides in Tallahassee, Florida.
