TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State junior shortstop Stephen Drew was selected in the first round (15th overall) of Monday’s Major League Baseball Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Drew, the 16th Seminole to be taken in the first round of the MLB Draft, is the third member of his family drafted in the first round as he joins brothers J.D. and Tim. FSU Sophomore outfielder/DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve was drafted in the second round (70th overall) by the San Francisco Giants. Both players have earned All-ACC and All-America honors this season in leading the Seminoles to a 45-21 overall record.

The Seminoles play this weekend at Arkansas in NCAA Super Regional competition. Drew, who was named Co-MVP of the Tallahassee Regional over the weekend, is currently hitting .353 with 17 home runs, seven triples, 14 doubles, 12 stolen bases and 55 RBI. Martinez-Esteve won the ACC triple crown with a .391 batting average, 19 home runs, and 81 RBI.

On getting drafted in the first round

“I’m excited that the Arizona Diamondbacks thought enough of me to take me in the first round. They are a great organization and I look forward to being a part of it. But my main focus is getting us back to the College World Series. I’ll enjoy this feeling today since we have the day off, but tomorrow when we are at practice I can honestly say that getting to the College World Series will be the only thing on mind.”

On FSU’s Super Regional this weekend at Arkansas

“I’m going to do whatever I can to help us win this weekend. This is what we have worked for since the fall – to get a chance to play in the College World Series. I’ve never been to Omaha and that was a goal of mine when I came here to Florida State. I’m tired of being asked about going out there when J.D. was playing. I’m ready to go myself.”

On getting drafted 15th overall – not being one of the first couple picks

“I’m not disappointed at all. You never know what’s going to happen once the draft starts. I’m going to get a chance to play a game I love, hopefully for a long time. To get drafted in the first round is an honor.”

On frame of mind following draft

“Although I’m excited about being drafted by Arizona in the first round and looking forward to that next step, it is kind of a relief that the draft is over. I’ll worry about all of the other stuff that goes along with it after our season ends. I’ll have plenty of time to take care of that. Right now, the only thing I’m concerned about is winning this weekend against Arkansas.”
