Tallahassee, FL – Florida State University announced the hiring of broadcaster Steve Melewski today. The 22-year radio veteran who has been involved with baseball at all levels for the last 14 years will take over as the play-by-play announcer for the Seminole baseball program. Melewski replaces Lee Bowen who served as the voice of Seminole baseball for 16 years before passing away unexpectedly in July.
“I am thrilled to be joining one of college baseball’s best programs ever,” said Melewski. “Florida State baseball is like the big leagues, everything from a great winning tradition to incredible facilities. Coach Martin has built an amazing program and I am honored to become a part of it.
“The fans have become used to Lee Bowen’s first-rate broadcast and enthusiasm for FSU baseball. I will work very hard to continue that and honor what he meant to the FSU program.”
Melewski is currently the broadcaster for the Aberdeen IronBirds of the New York-Penn League. He called all 76 games for the IronBirds, which is a Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. He also served as the color commentator on the Frederick Keys and Bowie Baysox games on CN-8 Television the last two summers.

Melewski even called an inning of an Oriole game during his time with WBAL.
“It is great to have a genuine baseball enthusiast as part of our program,” said FSU Senior Associate Athletic Director Charlie Carr. “Steve is a baseball fan and a lifetime follower of the game. He has big shoes to fill but we have hired the best man for the job.”
Melewski’s experience extends beyond the diamond. He is currently employed by his alma mater Towson University as both a play-by-play announcer and color commentator for women’s basketball CAA games and Tiger football in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He hosted the George Welsh football and Jeff Jones basketball shows at the University of Virginia on top of working for the University of Virginia radio network. For two seasons he also hosted the Gary Williams Maryland Basketball Radio Show.

Melewski served as the sports director for WBAL Radio in Baltimore and WFMD Radio in Frederick, MD. At WBAL, Melewski was named Maryland Sportscaster of the Year in 2000 and was named a two-time finalist by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
