TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State men’s tennis team started the first day of the Seminole Invitational with a stellar 14-1 record in both singles and doubles play. Of the eight players competing in tomorrow’s Singles A Draw quarterfinal matches, six competitors hail from Tallahassee with four Florida State athletes and two from Florida A&M. Joining Florida State at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center is Jacksonville, North Florida, Florida A&M, Southern Mississippi, UAB, Florida Golf Coast, South Alabama and Bethune-Cookman.

In the first round of the Singles A Draw, No. 3 seed Anderson Reed, a junior from Daphne, Ala., won his match 6-2, 6-1 over Alex Bernard of South Alabama to advance to the second round and defeat Paolo Alvarado of USM 7-6 (1), 6-1. Also in the A Draw was senior Jason Zafiros (Bradenton, Fla.) who defeated Beau Treyz of UNF 6-3, 6-2 to move to the second round where he won 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-4 over Danny Manlow of UAB.

Freshman Dominic Cotrone (Bradenton, Fla.) defeated USA’s Daniel Leitner 6-2, 6-1 the first round and then faced Julian Beliar of North Florida to win 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in a close three set match. Junior Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) won his first round match 7-6(4), 6-2 over Dean Tsamas of FGCU and then beat Daniel Moser of UAB 6-2, 6-7(11), 6-1.

In the B Draw of singles, redshirt sophomore Brian Alden (Barrington, Ill.) was the lone Seminole as he defeated Mathew Hansen of Jacksonville 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, he won 6-4, 6-2 over FAMU’s Temuera Asafu-Adjaye. The quarterfinals of both singles draws will begin at 8:30 tomorrow.

In the doubles draw, Alden and Zafiros teamed up in the first round to win 8-3 over Martinez and Hansen of Jacksonville. In the second round, the duo won 8-2 over UAB’s Manlow and Helliar. Receiving a bye in the first round was the duo of sophomore Blake Davis (Austin, Texas) and Bucaro. In the second round, the pair defeated Florida Gulf Coast’s Rock and Bao 8-2. Cotrone and Reed also received a bye and won their second round match 8-1 over Fantova and Condez of Jacksonville.
