TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –
For the second time in her three-year career, junior Brandi Stuart has been named ACC Player of the Week by the conference office. Stuart’s selection marks the third time this season that a Seminole has been named player of the week and it comes on the heels of FSU’s sweep of Georgia Tech who was previously undefeated in the conference. For the week, Florida State went 4-0.
The junior second baseman had another phenomenal week for FSU as she continues to chase All-American honors. The Cerritos, CA native hit .714, scored seven runs, had 4 RBIs, two triples, a home run, slugged 1.714 and had an on base percentage of .818 in four games last week. Her 10th home run of the year tied a single-season school record. She went 4-for-5 with runners on base and hit 1.000 with runners in scoring position for the week.
In game one of the doubleheader versus UAB, a five-inning 9-0 win, Stuart followed Jessica van der Linden’s lead off single in the fourth by hitting her team leading fourth triple of the season to left center knocking in her first RBI of the weekend. In the second half of the twin bill, FSU fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first. Stuart keyed a three-run bottom of the first as her triple knocked in the second run of the game and she scored on the play on a head’s up base running play after a Blazer error. After she singled again in the third, UAB didn’t pitch to her again the rest of the day.
In Saturday’s ACC opener versus Georgia Tech, Stuart scored four of FSU’s 11 runs and knocked in two RBIs as the Seminoles ended the Yellow Jackets dream of a perfect ACC run by sweeping the doubleheader from the previously unbeaten Jackets (37-11, 6-0). Stuart manufactured the third run of the first inning with more adept base running. After singling up the middle and advancing to second on the throw to third base, she stole her 42nd base of the season to move up to third. Then on a Kimmy Carter ground out, Stuart waited until the short stop had committed to the throw to first and took off for home scoring the third run of the inning. Tech didn’t pitch to Stuart again, walking her in the third and fourth innings. She did steal another base in the fourth and came around to score. In game two, Stuart’s record tying third inning home run drove in the eventual game-winning run as FSU completed the sweep of GT.
Next up for the Seminoles is the rival Florida Gators who head to Tallahassee Wednesday April, 17th. The doubleheader between Florida State and Florida is set for a 4:00 p.m. start at the Seminole Softball Complex and there is no admission charge for all regular season games.
