Tennis Begins NCAA Singles Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Florida State men’s and women’s tennis teams begin play in the NCAA Singles championship Wednesday, May 23rd. The men’s team will have two players competing, redshirt senior Lucas Poullain and senior Guy Iradukunda, and the women’s team has one competitor, sophomore Carla Touly.

Poullain will take on Florida’s Oliver Crawford at 8:00 a.m. Crawford went 18-5 in the spring with matches played on courts one through four. He was 10-0 on court three and 5-3 against nationally ranked opponents. Poullain met up with Crawford early in the season when the two teams met in Lake Nona for the College MatchDay event. Poullain defeated Crawford in straight sets, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), and was the match clincher as the Seminoles took down the No. 8 Gators, 4-3.

Iradukunda will be taking on Brandon Holt right after Poullain plays at 11:30 a.m. Holt was 13-7 in the spring with all his matches for USC on court one. He was 12-8 this season against ranked opponents. Iradukunda did not see Holt during the season, but Poullain defeated Holt in straight sets in the round of 32 at the ITA National Fall Championships.

Touly begins play at 10:30 a.m. as she takes on Alyssa Tobita of Oregon. Tobita was 18-11 with a 14-7 dual match record. She was 11-7 on court one and 6-10 against nationally ranked opponents.

With a win, each of the Florida State players will continue to the round of 32 tomorrow.
