Tennis Goes 5-1 First Day Of Napa Valley Classic

Sept. 20, 2013

NAPA, Calif. – The Florida State men’s tennis team went 5-1 today at the Napa Valley Tennis Classic against some of the top teams in the nation. The day ended on a high note as both doubles teams posted wins at the Meadowood Napa Valley Resort.

“Today was a great day for the Noles,” said associate coach Nick Crowell. “We persevered in a few matches when we were down, Benjamin and Marco fought off three match points point doubles to beat a really strong Texas A&M team. Dominic had a big win against a ranked opponent while Michael played well in singles to finish off his opponent in strong fashion. Day one is in the books and now we are preparing for another big day tomorrow.”

Sophomore Michael Rinaldi started off the morning with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Andrew Goodwin of Alabama. No. 116 Benjamin Lock, a junior, took on USTA junior Sameer Kumar and won 6-2, 6-1.

No. 57 Dominic Cotrone wrapped up singles against No. 100 Becker O’Shaughnessy of Alabama. The junior ran into some problems in the second set but prevailed to win 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.

“I think I played well today,” said Cotrone. “I knew Becker was a good player and he is ranked as well. I had chances to take the match in the second set and didn’t do it so I had to win it in the third. It was a good match to get some confidence. Michael and I played real well in doubles today. We finished well around the net and took advantage of our chances.”

In doubles play, Cotrone and Rinaldi won against Cal’s Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi 8-5. Sophomore Marco Nunez and Lock won 8-7 (7) over Texas A&M’s Jeremy Efferding and Jordan Szabo.
