Tennis Opens Season At Home

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 2014 Florida State men’s tennis season starts this weekend with the Seminoles Quad on Saturday and Sunday. The Seminoles host five other schools, Florida A&M, Furman, Mercer, North Florida and South Alabama to play 10 matches in two days.

Saturday’s first matches will be played at the Indoor Tennis Facility at 2566 Pottsdamer Rd. near the Don Veller Seminole Golf Course beginning at 9 a.m. Time and weather evaluation will determine the schedule for the remainder of the day.

“It’s been a great week with football winning the National Championship on Monday and now it’s time for our team to start the season,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “We have a very deep team and a lot of people to play this weekend. We have four matches and hope to prepare ourselves to the rest of the season. This weekend should get us set for the ITA Kickoff Weekend in two weeks.”

Saturday the No. 36 Seminoles take on No. 71 North Florida at 9 a.m. and then take on Mercer at 2 p.m. On Sunday Florida State faces South Alabama at 9 a.m. and concludes at 3 p.m. against Furman.

Ranked for the Seminoles is junior Benjamin Lock at No. 61 in the nation in singles. He and sophomore Marco Nunez are No. 9 in doubles after reaching the semifinals of the fall USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships.

The Seminoles return six players and welcome six newcomers to the squad. Senior Blake Davis along with juniors Dominic Cotrone, Lock and Cristian Gonzalez Mendez look to lead the squad along with sophomores Michael Rinaldi and João Gauer.

Nunez, a transfer from the University of Georgia, in joined by freshmen Jake Albo, Grayson Goldin, Jose Gracia, and Jack Haffey as newcomers. Freshman Parker Evertsen is redshirting this season.
