Terry Long was a record-setting track athlete at Florida State and later a record-setting coach. From 1959-63, he set school records in the 220 low hurdles and 120 high hurdles in addition to several relay team records. After graduation, he spent the next 20 years coaching, earning national JUCO Coach of the Year three times.
Long returned to Florida State in 1985 as the head women’s track coach and took over as head coach for both the men’s and women’s teams in 1988. Over his 15-year tenure at FSU, he coached 10 teams that won either Metro or ACC Championships and was voted conference or region Coach of the Year 14 times. He coached 272 all-conference athletes, nine Olympians, 82 All-America performances and 325 graduates.
