GAINESVILLE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State University junior Hannah Thomson finished in first place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in second place in the team standings as play in the Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida came to a close. For Thomson it was her first career collegiate victory and second consecutive top 10 individual finish and it was the third consecutive top four team finish for the rapidly improving Seminoles. Thomson’s victory marked the second individual championship by a Seminole in the last two seasons after Lacy Agnew earned medalist honors at the spring 2010 Pinehurst Challenge.
Florida won the tournament on its home course as it led wire to wire to claim the championship. The Gators were led by three players in the top seven and four players in the top 12. For Florida State it marked the second consecutive second place finish in the event – the Seminoles finished in second place to Michigan State in the event last season. Thomson earned medalist honors as she defeated Vicky Villanueva of Ohio State by two strokes.
“I’m really happy for our girls,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “We are really improving and gaining confidence as the season goes along. We hope that our own version of March Madness turns into April and May Madness. We are coming close to putting things together and becoming a good team.”
Thomson (Perth, Australia) gained command of the individual standings early in the third round as he birdied three of her first four holes to moved to two under and more importantly move into first place. As Thomson moved up the leader board, Charlotte Lorentzen of Georgia State bogeyed two of her first holes to open the door for the Seminole junior. Thomson carded four birdies on the front nine and played consistent golf on the back nine with eight of nine holes scores at par.
Thomason carded under par scores of 69 in the first and third rounds and added a 72 in the second round to finish with a an even par score of 210. She was the only gofer in the 90 player field who finished at par or better. Her scores of 69 came within two strokes of tying her career best score for a single round while her tournament score of 210 was the best of her three-year career as a Seminole.
“I played really steady all week,” said Thomson. “I made a lot of ups and downs and par saves and playing like that help me shoot low. It was a great week for our team and we are all very excited about playing well at a good time during the season. We are all going to be very confident heading into our next tournament.”
Junior Maria Salinas (Lima, Peru) continued her strong play during the spring season as she earned the third top 20 finish of her career. She finished in second place at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, in a tie for 19th at the Kinderlou Forest Challenge and in a tie for seventh at the Lady Gator.
Salinas carded her second consecutive score of 74 in the third and final round. She closed well as she was at even par of her final eight holes of the round as she finished the day with four birdies. Salinas totaled more birdies in the third round (four) than she did in the first two rounds combined.
Florida State tees it up next at the Bryan National Collegiate March 25-27 in Greensboro, N.C. The Seminoles enter the event as the defending tournament champion.
“We are all excited because we are about to hit the fun part of our schedule,” said Bond. “We are going to play some tough course against some really tough reams and I think our girls are preparing themselves well for the stretch run of the season.”
