TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Three Seminole freshmen, third baseman Tyler Martin, pitcher Parker Messick and first baseman Dylan Simmons, were named Freshmen All-Americans by Collegiate Baseball Tuesday.
Martin, from Tallahassee, hit .310 with 18 hits, 17 runs scored and 13 runs batted in, reaching base at a .481 clip. His 16 walks ranked 22nd nationally and he led FSU with five doubles and a triple. Martin had a season-high three hits against No. 3 Texas Tech and had the walk-off single in FSU’s 9-8 win over previously undefeated Mercer on March 3.
Messick, from Plant City, was previously named one of D1Baseball’s top freshman pitchers after allowing just one earned run in 11.2 innings out of the bullpen. He finished his first season with a 0.77 earned run average, 19 strikeouts and just two walks allowed. Against No. 1 Florida, the last undefeated team in the country, Messick earned the save in FSU’s 2-0 win by pitching the final three innings and striking out seven batters, a career high. He earned his only win of the season in his FSU debut, pitching a scoreless inning on February 15 against Niagara.
Simmons, from Jacksonville, hit .378 over 37 at-bats, with four doubles, seven RBI and four runs scored splitting time between the designated hitter and first base positions. He ended the season on a four-game hitting streak, including a career-high three hits and two doubles at No. 1 Florida. In Florida State’s season finale against Illinois State, Simmons’ two-run single proved to be the game-winning hit.
On the mound, Simmons made three appearances and struck out a pair of batters in his debut against Niagara.
