SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Florida State men’s and women’s tennis teams begin play tomorrow in the Oracle ITA Fall Championships. The women’s team will be sending junior Carla Touly to compete in the singles competition, while the men are sending Junior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila to compete in the doubles competition.
Touly, ranked 11th in the preseason ITA rankings, qualified as a singles at-large bid after making it to the semifinals of the consolation bracket at All-Americans in October and then making it to the quarterfinals of the ITA Southeast Regional two weeks later. Touly is 5-5 this fall with two wins over ranked opponents.
Touly will be up against conference foe Meible Chi of Duke at 12:00 p.m. ET. Chi is ranked 31 in the ITA rankings and comes into the tournament as the seventh seed.
“I know Carla is really excited to be out in Arizona representing the Garnet and Gold at this huge ITA National Championship event,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “This semester has been filled with tremendous growth for Carla, and her preparation for this week has been spot on, especially since our Regional Championships two weeks ago. Her journey starts at 12 p.m. tomorrow and she is ready.”
Knaff and Arcila just started playing together at the ITA Southeast Regional, in which they made it all the way to the championship match before losing. The pair is 4-1 in the fall. They went 2-0 together last season with wins over New Orleans and Liberty.
The Seminole duo will be taking on Toby Boyer and Micah Klousia of Nebraska at 6:30 p.m. ET.
“We are really excited to be out here and play in the Fall Championships,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “Alex and Sebastian got to the final of the regional in their first tournament together and I am excited to see if they can build off of that this week.”
In its second year, having replaced the ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships, the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships is the lone event on the collegiate tennis calendar to feature competitors from all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) playing in the same tournament.
The Oracle ITA National Fall Championships will feature a 64-player singles draw for men and women, while men’s and women’s doubles will consist of a 32-team draw. Players qualified for the tournament through designated placings at earlier ITA National Championships and the ITA Regional Championships.
Recently, it was announced that the men’s and women’s singles champions will receive main draw wildcards into a 2019 Oracle Challenger Series tournament.
The 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships men’s and women’s singles finals will stream live on ESPN3 and the ESPN App on Sunday, November 11th, beginning at 10 a.m. PDT/1 p.m. EDT, with the women’s final. The singles championships will re-air on ESPNU on Tuesday, November 13th, at 3 p.m. EDT/12 p.m. EDT.
