Three Noles Still Alive After Day Two of Regionals

ATHENS, Ga. – After two days at the ITA Southeast Regional, the Seminoles have three student-athletes still in the competition.

“We played in some good matches today and came away with some important wins,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “ I was proud of Richard (Thongoana) for gathering two wins in the main draw before losing to the one seed (Johannes Ingildsen) in three sets. I am very pleased with Alex (Knaff) and Sebastian (Arcila), as well, as they advanced to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. I am proud of Rana (Bhullar) for advancing and staying alive in the consolation bracket.”

Senior Alex Knaff and sophomore Sebastian Arcila paired up for their second doubles win of the weekend as they took down Miami’s Adria Soriano Barrera and Kaya Gore 8-6. With the win, they advanced to the quarterfinals tomorrow against Andy Andrade and Lukas Greif of Florida.

Junior Rana-Roop Singh Bhullar is the other Seminoles still fighting in the regional as he advanced to the quarterfinals of the singles consolation bracket. Bhullar advanced to the round of 16 after his first opponent had to withdraw due to an injury. In the round of 16, He battled in a three-set match and came away with a victory. After taking the first set 6-4 from Gabriel Sidney (FAU) Bhullar lost the second set 6-4. In the third set super-breaker, Bhullar claimed the match with a 10-5 win.

In the singles main draw, the Seminoles came away with two wins in the first round. Freshman Richard Thongoana took down Phillip Gresk (Georgia Tech) 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. Thongoana lost in the round of 16 to the one seed, Florida’s Johannes Ingildsen 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Knaff earned his second singles win of the tournament as well, defeating Alex Diaz (Georgia) in the round of 32, 6-3, 6-4. He too lost in the round of 16 to Juan Pablo Grassi Mazzuchi (UCF) 6-2, 6-4.

Junior Enzo Le Seguillon and sophomore Chase Wood lost in the round of 32. Le Seguillon fell to Alex Phillips (Georgia) 6-3, 6-4 and Wood lost to Andrew Li (Georgia Tech) 6-4, 6-0.

In the doubles main draw, Bhullar and Wood got eliminated in the round of 16. They earned two wins on day one of the regional, but their run came to an end on Sunday as they lost to
Francisco Bastias and Bojan Jankulovski of Miami 8-6.

In the qualifying consolation bracket. Freshman Bryn Nahrung lost to Murphy McCullough (Georgia Southern) 6-4, 6-3.
