TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Amanda Doherty, Kathleen Sumner and Puk Lyng Thomsen – three members of the nationally ranked Florida State Women’s Golf Team – have been named to the 2020 Women’s Golf Coaches Association Scholar Athlete Team. Doherty, who graduated from Florida State with academic honors in May, is just the fourth golfer in school history who has been named to the team in each of her four years as a Seminoles. Doherty joins a select group that includes Whitney Brummett-Hall (2005-08), Kim Metraux (2015-18) and Morgane Metraux (2015-18). Sumner and Thomsen were named to the prestigious team for the second time during their careers.

Selection to the WGCA All-American Scholar Team requires a cumulative 3.5 grade point average.

Florida State was one of 10 schools in the ACC who had at least three golfers named to the 2020 WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete Team. It marked the sixth consecutive season that multiple Seminoles has earned the prestigious honor. It also marked the 21st season at least one Seminole has been on the WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete team in the 25 years the team has been named (since 1996).

Amy Bond, who enters her 11th season as Florida State’s Head Coach in 2020-21, has made academics a cornerstone of her program. The Seminoles had seven players named to the 2019-20 ACC Academic Honor Roll, two named to the 2019-20 All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf Team and three to the 2019-20 WGCA All-American Scholar Team.

“Excellence in academics has always been a priority for our program,” said Bond. “Our players work so hard to excel on the golf course, and they work equally as hard in the classroom. “Having three members named WGCA All-American Scholars makes me proud as a coach. These players have maintained cumulative 3.5 GPA’s or above over their careers as Seminoles while playing golf which encompasses the entire year of playing. I am extremely proud of Amanda, Kathleen, and Puk for achieving this great honor.”

In the last seven seasons under Bond, a total of seven different Seminoles have been selected to the WGCA Scholar Athlete Team a total of 18 times.

Sumner, who was also named to the WGCA All-American Scholar Athlete Team in 2018, was named to the 2020 ACC Academic Honor Roll and earned Academic President’s List Honors (4.0 grade point average) during the fall of 2017 and the spring of 2019. She also earned as Dean’s List Honors in the spring of 2018, the fall of 2019 and the spring of 2020.

“I feel like it is definitely important for our team to excel both on the golf course and in the classroom,” said Sumner. “As one of the team leaders, it is my responsibility to keep prioritizing academics for both myself and my teammates.”

Florida State has earned a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or better in 19 consecutive semesters, 3.3 or better in 16 consecutive semesters and 3.6 or better in eight of the last nine semesters. The Seminoles earned a 3.742 team GPA during the spring semester of 2020 despite classes taught online for the majority of the semester because of the coronavirus.
