Tallahassee, FL –
Florida State head soccer coach Patrick Baker has announced the Seminoles 2003 captains as the team begins to prepare for its spring season. Amber Tollefson was re-elected by her teammates to serve as one captain while fellow junior Kristin Boyce will join her. The two players will be seniors this fall and will be the only two four-year starters on the squad.
“Our team selected the captains and they chose our two seniors for next year,” said Baker. “Amber (Tollefson) will return as a captain after serving in that role as a junior last fall and (Kristin) Boyce has meant so much to our program on and off the field. They are two remarkable young ladies and are a part of a couple of classes that came to Florida State when a lot of other players wouldn’t.”
Tollefson and Boyce are the only Seminoles to have ever gone to three straight NCAA Tournaments and the only players who have never experienced a losing season in their first three years in Tallahassee. They have combined to start 129 of 138 matches since arriving in Tallahassee as members of a recruiting class ranked 12th in the nation.
“These two players have pretty much known only remarkable seasons, NCAA Tournaments and Sweet 16 appearances,” said Baker. “Their wealth of knowledge in where we have been and where we are going is great. They will not only continue the leadership we had from last year but they will provide a great deal to what we believe will be a very talented freshman class.”
Boyce, an All-Region selection by SoccerBuzz in 2001, is one of the most underrated players wearing a Seminole uniform by those outside of Tallahassee. The left back is not only FSU’s most reliable defender but she is the team’s most dangerous offensive threat from the back line. She has lead all Florida State defenders in scoring every year since she arrived as a freshman in 2000 and she is the heart of FSU’s defense. This is her first team being voted a captain by her teammates and Boyce is welcoming the challenge.
“I am really honored that my teammates think enough of me to vote me a captain for the upcoming season,” said Boyce. “I am going to rely heavily on Amber’s experience as a leader but also try to continue to set an example on and off the field for our younger players.”
“Boyce has always been a team leader on and off the field,” said Tollefson. “She will be an enforcer and a great leader for us. She and I have a special bond because we came here together as freshmen and have been through everything together. It means a lot to be able to finish our careers together as captains.”
Tollefson was a second team All-ACC selection in 2001 and is coming off another big season. She tied for the team lead with six assists and five of those six assists were game-winning assists, which led the team and is an all-time FSU single season record. Once again Tollefson was a nightmare for schools from the state of Florida as she recorded five of her team-leading six assists versus in-state opponents. She is now fifth on FSU’s all-time list for career assists. She also displayed the ultimate act of unselfishness when she relinquished her starting spot for a few games for what she believed was the good of the team.
“I learned so much last season as a captain especially from my fellow captain Jenny (Garcia),” said Tollefson. “She was a role model for everyone on our team but even more so for me. She was an amazing captain and I tried to learn from her and the way she represented herself to the team.
“This year it is such an honor to be re-elected. I think I struggled with some things as a captain last year. I know you don’t need a captain’s armband to lead on this team but that doesn’t take away from how honored I am by this. I will take what I learned and do a better job this season.”
