Trio Of Harriers Claim ACC Weekly Honors

ACC Release

TALLAHASSEE – For the second time this season Erin Phelps and Yasmine Abbes have collected ACC Women’s Performer and Freshman Performer of the Week honors, only this time they’ve got company, with redshirt freshman Jacob Holmes claiming Men’s Performer of the Week honors.

The trio turned in strong efforts at Friday’s FSU Invitational, with Phelps and Abbes leading the Noles women to a runner-up team finish, while Holmes paced the under-manned men with a 10th-place showing.

All three posted career-best times at the Apalachee Regional Park course against large fields.

Phelps placed fifth overall – the fourth scoring collegian – covering the 5,000-meter course in 17:49.2 as the Seminoles’ top finisher. It marked the second time in three races the Tallahassee native and Chiles High grad was the team’s top finisher.

Abbes placed 10th overall – ninth among scoring collegians – in 18:02.3 and was the FSU’s No. 2 finisher in the field of 224 finishers. The Nijmegen, Netherlands native and middle distance standout has shown continued improvement in her first season of collegiate competition over longer distances.

The Noles placed four runners in the top 17 and finished second to Florida’s full lineup, despite sitting out their top 10 runners in preparation for Saturday’s NCAA Pre-National meet in Terre Haute, Ind.

Holmes, who missed the entire 2018 season due to injury, recorded a 48-second personal-best in the 8,000-meter men’s race; just his third competition at that distance this season. The Auckland, New Zealand native ran 25:10.3 to place 11th overall – ninth among scoring collegians – in a field of 204 finishers.
