Two Noles Get WNBA Camp Invites

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Two additional members of Florida State Women’s Basketball’s all-time winningest senior class find themselves preparing for the upcoming WNBA season. Senior forward Ivey Slaughter earned herself an invitation to the New York Liberty Training Camp, while senior guard Brittany Brown was extended an invite to participate in the defending champion Los Angeles Sparks’ Training Camp.

All four active members of FSU’s senior class that totaled 106 wins have professional basketball in their future. Senior Leticia Romero was drafted in the second round by the Connecticut Sun, but will put her focus on playing with the Spanish National Team this summer that won a silver medal at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio.

Center Kai James was chosen in the third round by the New York Liberty and will join Slaughter in the Big Apple for training camp, which begins this Sunday, April 23. Preseason games in the WNBA begin on April 29 while the regular season tips off on May 13.

Slaughter’s workmanlike demeanor on the court is an attractive quality for several professional teams. She became known as the “dirty work” player who was also efficient from the floor offensively and was a strong post defender. The Macon, Ga., native is coming off a career-best 52.4 percent shooting as a senior, and finished in the Top 5 at FSU in six different categories.

Brown showed a similar on-court display as Slaughter, grinding on every possession. Originally played as a shooting guard, the Fort Walton Beach, Fla., native showed her versatility the last few years by handling the point-guard spot very well. She is a tenacious defender whose 320 career steals is the most in a career at FSU and the 16th-most all-time in the ACC.

Additional senior Gabby Bevillard also has a tremendous future. After retiring from the team two years ago, she has worked her way toward a Nike internship this summer in Oregon. The Sport Management major will earn her Bachelor’s Degree on May 6.
