Tallahassee, FL –
Jessica van der Linden continued to make her case to be named a back-to-back All-America and back-to-back ACC Player of the Year Saturday as she no-hit North Carolina (40-18, 6-4) and drove in the game-winning run for the second time on the day in FSU’s 5-0 victory. The no-hitter was the ninth of van der Linden’s career and she now has three no-hitters and a perfect game already this season. The senior moved to 22-4 on the season and 2-1 in the ACC. The win was the 50th of the year for the Seminoles as they wrapped up the ACC regular season title for the 11th time in 13 years. This is the 13th season the Tribe has reached the 50-win plateau.
Veronica Wootson and Natasha Jacob continued to provide the spark for FSU (50-5, 7-1) as each player went 2-for-3 with a run scored. van der Linden was one of four Seminole’s to record an RBI and it increased her team leading total to 43 on the year. The first team All-America also did it in the circle as she fanned 14 batters. She now has double digit strikeouts in her last three games.
van der Linden got off to a hot start in game two in the circle. The senior struck out the side in the second and third inning and recorded seven straight K’s at one point in the first three frames. She retired the first 12 batters in order before issuing a lead-off walk on a 3-2 pitch to open the fifth inning. The senior came right back and got two more strikeouts to raise her total to 10 on the afternoon.
After retiring the first 12 batters she faced and then issuing a walk, van der Linden then set down the next four batters before a walk and an error put two runners on with just one out as UNC threatened for the first time in game two. Natashalyn Snipes flew out to shallow left for the second out of the frame and then van der Linden then ended the threat on her 11th strikeout of the day.
Kim Hoffer recorded just the fourth hit of the day against Heel starter Allison Yin (16-7, 3-1) with one out in the sixth. She was followed by Veronica Wootson who ripped a single down the left field line for her second hit of the day. Jacob singled for her second hit of the day as well loading the bases and giving van der Linden a chance to help her own cause. The senior went down 0-2 before dropping an RBI single into center field and plating Hoffer from third. The throw home was mishandled allowing Wootson to score and both base runners to move up a base. Clean-up hitter Elisa Vasquez then singled to center as well driving in FSU’s third run of the afternoon. Carly Brieske and Tatiana George each singled as well driving in the fourth and fifth runs of the game and knocking Yin out of the game. New pitcher Ashley Allen ended the five-run sixth and van der Linden set UNC down in order in the seventh to complete the sweep.
