TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Losing at home for just the second time this season, Florida State (16-7, 9-4 ACC) was defeated in straight sets on Friday night by Notre Dame (17-6, 10-3 ACC) by the score of 20-25, 25-27, 19-25.
Payton Caffrey led the team with 14 kills and had only three errors for a .297 hitting percentage, and while Taryn Knuth finished with three kills, zero errors and five blocks, they were the only two Seminole players with a hitting percentage above .140, as FSU ended with 16 attack errors.
“It was a disappointing performance tonight,” said FSU head coach Chris Poole. “I felt like we accomplished several things this week in practice, so I was surprised that we came out so flat. With the exception of Payton, no one else got into a rhythm offensively, and we couldn’t get the ball to our middles like we normally do because our passing was so poor. It was disappointing overall to play like that, and the girls are going to need to step up and play better Sunday if they want to win.”
It was a streaky start to the match as Florida State scored three of the first four points with a pair of kills from Caffrey, and then Notre Dame followed with an 8-2 run to take a 9-5 lead. The Seminoles rallied to tie the set at 11-11 after consecutive blocks involving Knuth, Jasmyn Martin and Marissa Stockman, but the Irish pushed back out to a 17-13 lead in the middle of the set. FSU got within two at 20-18 on a kill by Morgan Chacon, but Notre Dame closed out the set with a 25-20 win.
Notre Dame opened the second set with four consecutive points and eventually led by seven at 11-4, but the Noles rallied with a 6-1 run, including a kill by Morgan Chacon and a block from Knuth and Stockman, to cut the ND lead to two at 12-10. FSU tied the set at 14-14, and again at 20-20, behind kills by Caffrey, Martin and Knuth, and a Notre Dame attack error gave the Seminoles their only lead of the set at 21-20. Notre Dame scored four of the next five points to earn its first set point at 24-22, and the Noles held off a total of three set points on Kills by Chacon, Caffrey and Martin before the Irish took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 27-25 win.
The Fighting Irish used a 7-1 run to break out to a 9-4 lead in the early going of the third set, but the Seminoles cut the lead to one at 9-8 after an ace by Lauryn Burrows and a pair of blocks involving Knuth and Chacon. Notre Dame took control of the set, including a streak of scoring six in a row, to grow its lead to 21-12. FSU came back to cut the lead to six at 23-17 after a kill by Chacon, and held off a pair of set points, but ND completed the sweep with a 25-19 win in the third.
