Volleyball Sweeps GT to Close Regular Season on Six-Match Win Streak

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Florida State volleyball team defeat Georgia Tech 3-0 on Friday afternoon in its final match of conference play. The win marks FSU’s second sweep of the week and fourth consecutive road win.

The Seminoles (18-10, 12-8 ACC) topped the Yellow Jackets (13-18, 8-12 ACC) to close out the conference season on a six-match win streak. FSU has now finished the season with a winning record for the past 18 seasons, and has earned a winning ACC record for the last 12 consecutive seasons.

The team will now find out its postseason fate later this weekend during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, which airs on ESPNU Sunday, November 26th at 9:00 pm (EST). Florida State has made an appearance in the tournament for the last eight seasons, and has made 19 appearances overall dating back to 1983.

Set 1 – Florida State 25, Georgia Tech 12

The Seminoles started off strong in the opening set, holding the lead throughout the set and only letting the Yellow Jackets tie the score once in the beginning. Once again FSU saw a strong defensive presence that was able to set up a consistent offense, as four different players picked up at least one kill with no errors.

FSU opened the match with a strong showing on both offense and defense, picking up more kills than the Yellow Jackets and using six total blocks and 18 digs to hold Georgia Tech to a .000 attack percentage. Taryn Knuth got a hand on every one of the team’s blocks in the first set, earning one solo stuff and teaming up with Brianne Burkert and Christina Ambrose for the remaining five blocks.

Set 2 – Florida State 25, Georgia Tech 18

The Yellow Jackets put up a stronger fight in the second set, tying up the score five times in the beginning of the set. While the set stayed tight, the Seminoles held onto the lead and never slipped behind GT.

Freshman Tiana Jackson stayed perfect on offense through the first two sets, earning five kills on eight attacks (.625) and adding on an assisted block in the second set. The offense was led by Milica Kubura, who picked up eight kills on 17 total attacks (.352) and went five-for-seven in the second set.

Set 3 – Florida State 25, Georgia Tech 23

The third set showed the most balance between the two teams, as Georgia Tech held the lead through the first half of the set. Neither team was able to break away in the beginning as the set saw eight tied scores. As FSU gained the lead over GT, the Yellow Jackets still wouldn’t let the Seminoles run away with it, keeping the set within only a few points.

In the end, it was FSU’s strong offense that helped it close out the match. A pair of kills from senior Natasha Calkins helped the Seminoles take the final two points needed to finish off the sweep of the Yellow Jackets.

  • Florida State’s season record improves to 18-10, 12-8 ACC
  • Florida State improves to a 20-30 record against Georgia Tech
  • FSU finished the conference season on a 6-match win streak following Friday’s victory over Georgia Tech, with four of those wins coming on the road.
