Volleyball Sweeps UNC Asheville 3-0 in Home Opener

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 15 Florida State volleyball team outhit the UNC Asheville Bulldogs and stayed tough on defense to win its first match in the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational on Friday afternoon (Sept. 1).

Redshirt junior outside hitter Christina Ambrose started off strong in the first set, leading the Seminoles with four kills on nine total attacks (.429). Senior outside hitter Milica Kubura and freshman middle blocker Taryn Knuth also put on a show in the first set, earning three and four assisted blocks, respectively.

In the second set, FSU really found its groove on offense, hitting .419 and earning 16 kills on 31 total team attacks. The team kept attacking, serving and blocking errors to a minimum through the second set to keep the ball in play.

In the third set, the Bulldogs pushed harder on offense, hitting a match high .250 and notching 40 total attacks. Their offensive effort wasn’t enough to stay ahead of the Seminoles, as FSU outhit the Bulldogs once again to take the third set 25-20. The Seminoles’ defense also came together in the third set, as it recorded 21 total digs in the third set alone.

Quoting head coach Chris Poole

On his overall thoughts on today’s match…

“We’re certainly glad that we won the match, I felt like we played in spurts. I though Christina Ambrose really found her game again today, she really struggled the first weekend. She went out last season and had back surgery, so it was great to see her gain some confidence out there today. I though Taryn [Knuth] again and how well she played as a freshman.

“We know that a team like UNC Asheville is going to give us the best they have and that they’re going to make us have to play.”

On how today’s match prepared them for Colorado State tomorrow…

“Colorado State is bigger, they’re more physical, they’re a very well-coached team. We’re going to have to play better at the net, we’re going to have to hit better and block better against a team like that.”
