GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) – Florida State will face Duke for the ACC women’s golf championship on Sunday after defeating Wake Forest by a 4-1-0 score in the semifinals of match play at the ACC Championship Tournament at the Sedgefield Country Club. The Seminoles earned victories by Beatrice Wallin, Amelia Williamson, Alice Hodge and Taylor Roberts to defeat the Demon Deacons. Florida State will play the Blue Devils beginning at 9:00 a.m. Sunday with the opportunity to win the first ACC Championship in program history. Duke defeated Virginia by a 3-2 margin in the second semifinal match.
“I’m happy,” said Head Coach Amy Bond following the match. “It was a stressful day. We played some good golf and beat a really good Wake Forest team. Earning four of five wins was big. At the beginning of the week, we wanted an opportunity to play in the finals. Now we have the chance to make history and win our first ACC Championship.”
Wallin clinched the Seminoles’ victory with a 2 up victory over Wake Forest’s Emilia Migliaccio on the final hole of the match. The Seminole All-American won her first hole, extended her lead to four on hole No. 6 and never trailed. Migliaccio won three of four holes (10, 11 and 13) to begin the back nine and lower her deficit to just one. Wallin then countered with two consecutive wins on 14 and 15 to take a three hole lead. After surrendering holes 16 and 17 to Migliaccio, Wallin won the 18th hole to clinch her point and the match for the Seminoles.
“I was very happy with my game today,” said Wallin. “The match was great, with great shots and birdies. We are all very excited about tomorrow’s matches. I believe we are ready for it, and we will have lots of fun.”
Williamson won her first hole and never trailed as she defeated Wake Forest’s Siyun Liu by a 2&1 margin. She won four holes while losing only two in the 18 holes she played in gaining the first point of the match for the Seminoles.
“I am very happy with my win and the way I played,” said Williamson. “I made three birdies in a row to finish the match which has helped my confidence. I am super excited to get going tomorrow and can’t wait to make history.”
Hodge won her first hole, was tied after three holes, won the fourth hole and never trailed after hole No. 4 in earning a 4-3 win over Mimi Rhodes of Wake Forest. Hodge won four consecutive holes (3, 4, 5, and 6) to take a commanding four-stroke lead at the turn after nine holes. She held a four stroke lead after winning the 16th hole giving her an insurmountable four hole lead with just three holes to play.
Roberts defeated Wake Forest’s Rachel Kuehn in a match that lasted 24 holes before it moved to the Seminoles’ side of the ledger. She birdied her final hole to cap off the Seminoles’ team victory.
“I couldn’t be more excited for tomorrow and the chance to give our coaches their first ACC championship,” said Roberts. “Today’s match was one of the most exciting matches I have ever played. It was awesome to have my teammates supporting me and Coach Bond was a huge help on the course. We are certainly looking forward to tomorrow. It’s going to be a great day.”
In gaining the 4-1 win over the Demon Deacons, Seminole freshman Charlotte Heath battled throughout her match before falling Wake’s Lauren Walsh, 2 up. She carded birdies on holes 16 and 17 to draw herself within one hole before falling.
