TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State senior Petra Hule is the ITA 2022 National Senior Player of the Year as named by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The award honors the senior student-athlete who had the best year among all student-athletes in her class. She is the second Florida State tennis player to earn a national award from the ITA, and the first since Kia Asberg was presented with the ITA/Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship (2000).
Hule was named the ITA Southeast Region Senior of the Year and the ITA Southeast Region Most Improved Senior of the Year in early June.
Hule, who graduated from Florida State on April 30, 2022, with a degree in English, is a two-time All-American. She earned All-American honors in singles in 2022 and doubles in 2019 as named by the ITA. Hule is just the third two-time All-American in program history, and first since 1996.
Hule completed her incredible career ranked second in total victories (202), tied for first in doubles victories (106) and seventh in single victories (96) at Florida State. She was a member of four NCAA Tournament teams in her five seasons at Florida State – the Elite 8 in 2018, Round of 32 in 2019, Elite 8 for a second time in 2021 and the round of 32 in 2022. Hule played in both the singles and doubles draws in the 2022 NCAA Championships and was the No. 3 seeded player in the singles draw at the 2022 NCAA Championships
Hule was ranked No. 7 nationally in the final ITA singles rankings of the 2021-22 season. She was ranked as high as No. 3 nationally in singles (May 4) and was the No. 3 seed in the NCAA Singles Championship. She was ranked No. 20 nationally in the final ITA doubles rankings of the 2021-22 season with Anna Arkadianou
Hule is the eighth player from the ACC (Estela Perez-Smith, 2021; Hayley Carter, North Carolina, 2017; Danielle Collins, Virginia 2016; Kelcy Tefft, Notre Dame, 2009; Jenny Long, North Carolina, 2007; Megan Bradley, Miami, 2005 and Vanessa Webb, Duke, 1999) to earn the ITA Senior Player of the Year Award. The award was first presented in 1995 to Kathleen Cummings of Texas.
“For Petra to be selected as the ITA National Senior Player of the Year (in all of college tennis) is an incredible feat and punctuated an absolutely incredible season, and career,” said Seminole Head Coach Jen Hyde. “As a two-time All American, Petra’s development since coming to Florida State has been nothing short of stellar. The list of awards this month to top off her career runs long. To be selected as the ITA National Senior Player of the Year is as good as it gets. She is highly respected at the highest levels nationally in our college tennis world, and she has earned all of this with a lot of blood, sweat and tears poured in over the years. I could not be more happy for and proud of Petra for earning this final accolade as her collegiate career comes to a close.”
