Walch Captures ACC Player of the Week

Nov. 4, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the first time in her career, sophomore outside hitter Nicole Walch was named as the ACC Player of the Week, which was announced by the league office on Monday.

Walch is the third Seminole to garner the weekly accolades this season as her sister, Elise captured Player of the Week on Oct.21 before senior Ashley Neff was given the award on Sept. 16. Izzy Carmona was named the ACC Freshman of the Week on Oct. 21.

“We played really well as a team,” Walch said. “We really came together to take two wins against the top teams in the ACC and I think that’s fuel for us to keep going strong as we take it one match at a time.”

The Stuart, Fla. native led the Seminoles in kills (31), kills per set (3.88) and hitting percentage (.481) during a big weekend in which FSU captured two crucial conference wins over NC State and (then No.12) North Carolina.

In the five-set thrilling 3-2 victory over North Carolina on Friday, Walch swung her fifth 20-kill game of 2013, scoring 20 kills with a hitting percentage of .457 while adding five blocks. She also contributed towards the record-setting 28 total team blocks.

Her efforts helped the Seminoles pick up their fourth win over a top-25 team this season.

“I tried to be strong on every ball,” Walch said. “I’m really working on my off speed shots and I’m trying to get a lot of kills – that’s one of my main goals and I’ve been working on my passing as well.”

On Sunday, Walch recorded her 15th double-digit kill game of the season with a total of 11, while hitting .526. She also added nine digs in the 3-0 sweep of NC State.

“I’m proud of the whole team,” head coach Chris Poole said. “Nicole definitely had two great matches and her hitting was on fire. We have so many players stepping up at different times. This team is still finding its identity and still improving.”

Florida State jumped back up to No.18 in the AVCA polls after the pair of wins this weekend in addition to climbing 13 spots in the RPI to No.21.

The Seminoles hit the road for a pair of conference matches with Virginia on Friday, Nov. 8 in Charlottesville, Va. at 7 p.m. before heading to Blacksburg, Va. to play Virginia Tech on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 7 p.m.
