SUNSET, S.C. (seminoles.com) – Florida State freshman Beatrice Wallin is in a tie for second in the individual standings, and the Seminole women’s golf team is in a tie for seventh in the team standings after the first round of the Clemson Invitational at the Reserve at Lake Keowee. Wallin, who finished in a tie for seventh place at the inaugural Augusta National Women’s Amateur which wrapped up play in Saturday, birdied each of the final three holes of the round to move within two strokes of the individual lead. The Seminoles are playing without freshman sensation Frida Kinhult, who played in the ANA Inspiration in Rancho Mirage, Calif., over the weekend. Kinhult played in the ANA Inspiration – the first major of the 2019 LPGA season – as an amateur.

Auburn and Vanderbilt finished the first round in a tie for first place in the team standings with 10 under par scores of 278. The Seminoles are only nine strokes behind the Tigers and the Commodores as they play for their program record third consecutive team victory. The Seminoles entered the Clemson Invitational with team titles at both the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Evans Derby Experience in their last two events. Wallin is tied for second with Danielle DuToit of Purdue, Courtney Zeng of Vanderbilt, Beth Lillie of Virginia and Marian Smith of Tennessee. That quintet of players is chasing Julie McCarthy of Auburn who carded a 6 under par score of 66 in the first round.

“I am really pleased with how we played today,” said Head Coach Amy Bond. “The scoring conditions were perfect. We didn’t make all of the putts we needed to but we hung in there, and that’s what I was happiest with. We still have 36 holes to go, and even though we are anticipating rain tomorrow, we are excited about the next two days.

Wallin was sensational in the first round after missing Saturday’s practice round after playing in the final round of the ANWA as she earned five birdies and 17 holes scored at par or better in her round. She closed the round at 4 under par on her last six holes, was 4 under par on her back nine and was 4 under par on her final 11 holes of the round.

Wallin carded a team-high five birdies to tie her career best single round score of 68. She also carded a 68 in the second round of the Schooner Fall Classic in the fall of 2018. Her five birdies were tied for fourth among the 96 players in the field. Wallin carded pars on her first seven holes, totaled five birdies on her final 11 holes and earned birdies on her final three holes.

Freshman Puk Lyng Thomsen also completed the first round under par as she carded a 1 under par score of 71. She finished her round at 3 under par over her final 14 holes with three birdies and 11 holes played at par. After playing her first seven holes at 2 over par, she played her final 11 holes at 3 under par. Thomsen came within one stroke of tying her career best score of 70.

Freshman Amelia Williamson also played strong golf in the first round as she carded a 2 over par score of 73. She totaled third birdies on the afternoon. Williamson’s best stretch of holes came on her back nine as she closed the round at 2 under par on her final 10 holes. She closed her round with two birdies and her final seven holes of the round carded a par to come within two strokes of tying her best score for a single round.

Junior Amanda Doherty, who finished in a tie for 21st place at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur, played well in the first round of the Clemson Invitational with a score of 75. Junior Sandra Salonen, who is playing in her first event of the season, also carded a 3 over par score of 75.

With the potential for rain on Monday, the teams will play from a shotgun start in groups of four beginning at 8:30 a.m.
