Senior All-American Caroline Westrup shot a one-over par 73 and is in a tie for fourth place in the individual standings and the Florida State women’s golf team is in fourth place in the team standings after the first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at the Coco Beach Golf Course. Westrup is only one stroke out of the individual led while the Seminoles are only three stokes behind Georgia and Texas Christian in the team competition.
Georgia and TCU lead the team standings with identical scores of 302. Those two teams are two strokes ahead of Purdue and three strokes ahead of Florida State. Valentine Derrey of TCU, Kendall Dye of Oklahoma and Laura Nochta of Indiana are tied for the individual lead with even par scores of 72. Westrup is only one stroke off of the individual lead.
Westrup, the Seminoles’ three-time All-American, played very consistently on the par 72 course with a 37 on her first nine and a 36 on her second nine. She has won four individual championships during her career and is looking to add to her total as she begins the final season of her collegiate career.
Sophomore Macarena Silva is in a tie for eighth place after shooting a two-over par score of 74. Also counted in the team score for the Seminoles were identical scores of 79 by seniors Lauren Cousart and Sara Young. Young, the 2008 PGA Minority Tournament champion, is competing as a member of the Seminoles’ starting line-up for the first time in her career.
The 36-hole event, which is the first of the spring season for the Seminoles, continues Monday and concludes Tuesday.
