MELBOURNE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State junior Amelia Williamson shot a career-low 66 and is in second place in the individual standings, and the Seminole Women’s Golf team is tied for third place in the team standings after the first round of the Fourth Annual Moon Invitational at the Duran Golf Club.  Williamson carded the best round of her Seminole career with six birdies and the first eagle of her Florida State career.  She begins played in Monday’s second round just three strokes behind Pauline Roussin-Bouchard of South Carolina who shot a blistering 9-under par score of 63.

Florida State is playing in its first event since March of 2020 when spring sports competition was cancelled by the NCAA because of the COVID pandemic.

The Seminoles are in third place in the team standings with two rounds and 36 holes remaining to be played in the three round event.  South Carolina, the team-leader after the first round, holds a four-shot lead over the Seminoles while UCF is one stroke ahead of Florida State in second place.  The Seminoles are the highest ranked of the five ACC teams in the 18-team field with Virginia (tied for third), Louisville (eighth), Miami (tied for 13th) and North Carolina (tied for 13th) all battling in the season-opening tournament.

“For the first round of the year, I am very excited that we shot under par as a team especially considering there are nerves among all players early in the season,” said Head Coach Amy Bond.  “The wind picked up in the middle of the round and I think each of our players handled it very well.  We are looking to putting up more birdies (and eagles) tomorrow.”

Florida State totaled 16 birdies and one eagle among the players in the lineup in the first round.

Williamson was on fire from the beginning of the round with three birdies on her first six holes.  She would get to as many as six strokes under par during the round courtesy of the first eagle of her Seminole career on the par four hole No. 5.  Williamson totaled a team leading six birdies during the round including her final birdie on her final hole of the day to finish her best collegiate round at six under par.

Williamson bettered by one stroke her third round score of 67 in the third round of the 2018 ACC Championship tournament.  Her score of 66 marked the fifth time she has shot a score in the 60’s as a Seminole.

Junior Beatrice Wallin, who will play in the Second Annual Augusta Women’s Invitational, is in a tie for 32nd place with a first round score of 73.  The All-American totaled two birdies and 15 of 18 holes at par or better in finishing at one over par.

The Seminoles are playing with three freshmen who all earned their positions in the Seminoles’ opening weekend lineup.  Bond was very happy with the strong starts of the trio as they combined to finish the first round at a total of four over par with scores of 72 by Charlotte Heath and 74 by Taylor Roberts and Alice Hodge.

“I’m very pleased with the way each of the three freshmen played in the first round,” said Bond.  “I have no doubt that they were all nervous on the first tee; however there were all very composed through throughout the round.”

Florida State will play with South Carolina and UCF in the second round, which begins Monday at 9:50 for the Lady Gamecocks, Knights and Seminoles.
