Winston’s Star Power Shines Bright at ACC Kickoff

July 20, 2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Jameis Winston has been exceeding expectations at FSU for more than two years now, so it should come as no surprise he lived up to the hype Sunday surrounding his appearance at the Atlantic Coast Conference’s annual media event.

A record number of credentials were distributed for the 2014 ACC Kickoff with the reasoning behind the increased media presence clear: Jameis Winston drives web traffic, sells newspapers and generates retweets. The superstar quarterback of the country’s best college football program is the most famous athlete in this country not named Johnny Manziel or LeBron James.

He’s Jameis Winston. And Sunday — as he always does when the lights flip on and the recorders start rolling — he held court as writers and bloggers peppered him with questions ranging from defending a national championship to thoughts on the unionization of college athletes to his own maturation process.

But before all of that began, FSU’s third Heisman Trophy winner had his own question for the media:

“Before I say anything,” Winston said with a growing smile, “how does it feel to have an ACC team come in here with a national championship, y’all? Can we give the ACC a round of applause? Finally. We took it away from the SEC. It’s a blessing.”

And thus the tone was set for more than an hour of questions on a myriad of topics. Seminoles.com will have continued coverage on the event, including photos, stories on Winston and Charlie Ward’s relationship and P.J. Williams’ development into one of the nation’s best, video and much more.

In the mean time, here are some of the highlights of Winston’s time with the media Sunday, as shared on Twitter:
