Women’s Basketball To Open ACC Play on January 2nd at Wake Forest

The Florida State women’s basketball team (7-3) will tip off ACC play on Thursday, January 2nd at Wake Forest (9-1). The game will be played at 7 p.m. at Joel Coliseum and can be heard in Tallahassee on WFLA AM 1270 or by accessing Florida State has won three out of the last five games over Wake Forest, but the Seminoles haven’t won in Winston-Salem since the 1997-98 season – Coach Sue Semrau’s first year at Florida State. The Seminoles have now won back-to-back ACC openers having defeated NC State 74-70 in Tallahassee in 2000-01 and Georgia Tech last year, 87-78, in Atlanta. Junior wing Tasheika Morris continues to lead the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. Senior Katelyn Vujas is the squad’s rebound leader at 6.8 rebounds per game.


Since Sue Semrau’s first season (1997-98), FSU is 1-4 in first games of the New Year. Since 1980-81, FSU is 7-15 in the first game of the New Year, including 2-9 against ACC opponents.


Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Florida State 14-10. The series began in 1991-92 when FSU joined the ACC. Sue Semrau is 5-5 vs. Wake Forest. In her first season, she led the Seminoles to a sweep of the Deacons. Since then, the two teams have split the regular-season series, each winning at its home court.

Florida State has won two straight ACC openers, defeating#12 NC State, 74-70, in Tallahassee in 2000-01 and Georgia Tech 87-78 in Atlanta last season. Overall, FSU is 2-9 in ACC openers while Semrau is 2-3. FSU has faced Wake Forest one other time in its ACC opener — a 64-59 loss in 1999-2000.
