NEW YORK, NY – Senior Brooke Wyckoff led all scorers with 20 points and sophomore Katelyn Vujas had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds as the Florida State women’s basketball team, in its first game since taking the week off for final exams, defeated St. Francis College, 73-65, Sunday afternoon at the Pope Physical Education Center. With the win, FSU improved to 6-2 and has its best start since opening 5-2 in the 1992-93 season. St. Francis falls to 0-8.
“I thought we did a great job on the boards today,” FSU Head Coach Sue Semrau said. “We shot the ball much better in the second half and got back into a rhythm and picked up another important road victory.”
Although only trailing one time at 2-0, the Seminoles had a poor offensive showing, shooting just 34 percent in the first half and led just 29-25. Wyckoff paced the team with nine points, but FSU leading scorer April Traylor was held to just a point. FSU’s biggest lead was 10 points when with the score 12-11 at the 10:29 mark, the Seminoles ran off nine straight points to take a 21-11 advantage. Led by Levys Torres‘ seven boards, the Tribe had a 25-16 rebounding advantage at the break.
The Terriers pulled to within three at 35-32 at the 17:18 mark, but then the Seminoles went on a 13-6 run to go up double-digits at 48-38 with 12:30 to play. Florida State led by as many as 15 at 62-47 with 5:23 remaining, but St. Francis got as close as six at 71-65 in the closing minutes. FSU shot 56 percent in the second half and continued to dominate the boards, outrebounding SFC 46-31 for the game.
“We got a great effort out of Katelyn Vujas who has been sick the last couple of days.with a double-double and a career-high 14 rebounds,” Semrau said. “I was very pleased with Brooke and her offensive effort. I thought we moved the ball well offensively and after we overcame a shooting slump in the first half to shoot 56 percent in the second half .”
Traylor and Shinikki Whiting each added 11 points while Torres finished the game with 10 rebounds.
Florida State will play at Fordham on Tuesday, December 20th at 7 p.m.
