TALLAHASSEE, Fla (seminoles.com) – The nationally ranked Florida State Women’s Golf Team continued its incredible streak of academic success this spring as it earned a cumulative team grade point average of 3.74 with two golfers (Amanda Doherty and Elle Johnson) named to the President’s List (4.0 GPA) and three (Caroline Hodge, Kathleen Sumner and Amelia Williamson) named to the Dean’s List (3.5).
The Seminole golf program is traditionally one of Florida State’s most academically sound-teams with each player under 10th-year Head Coach Amy Bond having earned their bachelor’s degrees. Bond and the Seminoles were recently lauded for their Academic Progress Rate by the NCAA for their perfect graduation rate in each of the last 10 cycles from 2009 through 2018.
With two golfers earning their degrees this spring (Doherty and Sandra Salonen), the Seminoles’ 2020 roster was one of the most academically talented teams in school history. The golfers who competed for Florida State in the 2019-20 fall and spring seasons, have been named to the President’s List a combined nine times and the Dean’s List a combined 13 times during their careers.
“Success in the classroom and success on the golf course are priorities for our team,” said Johnson. “Academically, I made it a goal for myself to make the President’s List and to do everything I could to maintain that level of success. I made sure I put in the work before tests and other graded material like I would put in work for a tournament. I think I did a good job of staying on top of my schoolwork and making time for studying and completing assignments around golf.”
Bond, a Florida State alumna who has coached 27 players who have been named to the ACC Academic Honor Roll, knows how important academic success is to her student-athletes.
“I am thrilled with the way that the girls handled this semester,” said Bond. “They stayed engaged and dedicated to their classes during a time where they could have easily been distracted. Words cannot express how extremely proud of them for finishing with a 3.74 GPA as a team. Each player on our roster achieved over a 3.0. This is an outstanding accomplishment and each of them played an active role in our academic success.”
Bond also gave thanks to Florida State’s Student Athlete Academic Services Department.
“I would like to thank our Athletics Academic Support team for their continued support and hard work to help all of our teams achieve greatness in the classroom,” said Bond. “They are part of our family and deserve a lot of credit in helping us maintain our tremendous level of success.”
Cathy Badger, Senior Associate Director of the Florida State SAAS, is certainly thankful to have the opportunity to work with all the outstanding Seminole Student-Athletes.
“The academic success of each of our student-athletes is so incredibly important to the Department of Athletics and to Florida State University,” said Badger. “Every student-athlete on every team works non-stop to perform at very high levels in the classroom. It’s exciting when so many of our teams perform well academically.”
